    Autologous Cells for Kidney Bioengineering.

    Get PDF
Worldwide, increasing numbers of patients are developing end-stage renal disease, and at present, the only treatment options are dialysis or kidney transplantation. Dialysis is associated with increased morbidity and mortality, poor life quality and high economic costs. Transplantation is by far the better option, but there are insufficient numbers of donor kidneys available. Therefore, there is an urgent need to explore alternative approaches. In this review, we discuss how this problem could potentially be addressed by using autologous cells and appropriate scaffolds to develop 'bioengineered' kidneys for transplantation. In particular, we will highlight recent breakthroughs in pluripotent stem cell biology that have led to the development of autologous renal progenitor cells capable of differentiating to all renal cell types and will discuss how these cells could be combined with appropriate scaffolds to develop a bioengineered kidney

MODELLING PLASTIC DEFORMATION OF STAINLESS STEEL PIPES

    Get PDF
Plastic deformation is the most common technique adopted to manufacture complex shape pieces in the most efficient way. Even higher requirements need to be faced in the different applications. In order to target such requirement quality and compliance tests are carried out aimed to guarantee that these standards are faced; this often means a waste of material and economic resources. A far as concerns welded stainless steel pipes many criticises affecting the general trend of subsequent machining need to be considered. In this paper the effects of different process parameters and geometrical constrains on austenitic stainless steel pipe forming are studied by Finite Elements Method (FEM) simulations. The model sensitivity to input parameters is reported. The feasibility of the simulated process is evaluated through the use of Forming Limit Diagrams (FLD). </p

Universal Semantic Annotator: the First Unified API for WSD, SRL and Semantic Parsing

    Get PDF
In this paper, we present the Universal Semantic Annotator (USeA), which offers the first unified API for high-quality automatic annotations of texts in 100 languages through state-of-the-art systems for Word Sense Disambiguation, Semantic Role Labeling and Semantic Parsing. Together, such annotations can be used to provide users with rich and diverse semantic information, help second-language learners, and allow researchers to integrate explicit semantic knowledge into downstream tasks and real-world applications

Towards a comprehensive framework for V2G optimal operation in presence of uncertainty

    Get PDF
As the global fleet of Electric Vehicles keeps increasing in number, the Vehicle To Grid (V2G) paradigm is gaining more and more attention. From the grid point of view an aggregate of electric vehicles can act as a flexible load, thus able to provide balancing services. The problem of computing the optimal day-ahead charging schedule for all vehicles in the fleet is a challenging one, especially because it is affected by many sources of uncertainty. In this paper we consider the uncertainty deriving from arrival and departure times, arrival energy and services market outcomes. We propose a general optimization framework to deal with the day ahead planning that encompasses different kind of use-cases. We adopt a robust paradigm to enforce the constraints and an expectation paradigm for the cost function. For all constraints and cost terms we propose an exact formulation or a very tight approximation, even in the case of piece-wise linear battery dynamics. Numerical results corroborates the theoretical findings

AMuSE-WSD: an all-in-one multilingual system for easy word sense disambiguation

    Get PDF
Over the past few years, Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD) has received renewed interest: recently proposed systems have shown the remarkable effectiveness of deep learning techniques in this task, especially when aided by modern pretrained language models. Unfortunately, such systems are still not available as ready-to-use end-to-end packages, making it difficult for researchers to take advantage of their performance. The only alternative for a user interested in applying WSD to downstream tasks is to rely on currently available end-to-end WSD systems, which, however, still rely on graph-based heuristics or non-neural machine learning algorithms. In this paper, we fill this gap and propose AMuSE-WSD, the first end-to-end system to offer high-quality sense information in 40 languages through a state-of-the-art neural model for WSD. We hope that AMuSE-WSD will provide a stepping stone for the integration of meaning into real-world applications and encourage further studies in lexical semantics.
